Polyethylene (PE) vs Polypropylene (PP) Bags: A Buyer’s Guide

Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) bags are both widely used for packaging, but their different properties make them suitable for different applications. PE bags are soft, flexible and durable, making them a practical choice for general packaging, liners, freezer applications, heavy or sharp products and transit protection. PP bags, on the other hand, are stiffer, clearer and more resistant to heat and chemicals, making them well suited to retail displays, presentation packaging and dry food products where product visibility is important. PE also performs better in cold conditions because it remains flexible, while PP can become brittle at low temperatures. Both materials can be recyclable, although they are identified by different recycling codes and may require different collection streams. When choosing between PE and PP, businesses should consider factors such as flexibility, clarity, strength, temperature exposure, chemical resistance and the type of product being packaged. PE is generally the better option when durability and flexibility are priorities, while PP is preferable when presentation, rigidity and high clarity are more important.
