Poly bag thickness and micron guide: what gauge do you need?

Choosing the right poly bag thickness helps prevent tears, punctures and product damage while avoiding unnecessary material costs. In Australia, plastic film thickness is measured in microns (µm), with one micron equal to one-thousandth of a millimetre. As a general guide, 25 to 35µm suits lightweight items such as garments and produce, 35 to 50µm works well for general packing, 50 to 75µm is suitable for heavier products, and 75 to 100µm or more is recommended for heavy, sharp or industrial items. Thickness is only one factor when selecting a bag, as the type of plastic, seal, product weight, edges and handling conditions also affect performance. LDPE offers flexibility and puncture resistance, while HDPE provides strength with a thinner film. Imported bags may use gauge or mil instead of microns, so checking the measurement unit before comparing products is important. For example, 100 gauge is roughly 25µm, while 1 mil equals approximately 25.4µm. The best approach is to select the lightest thickness that can safely handle the product throughout packing, storage and transport, then test samples under real operating conditions before placing a large order.
