Dental crown vs dental implant: which one do you need?

A dental crown and dental implant solve different dental problems, so the right option usually depends on whether your natural tooth can be saved. A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a damaged but existing tooth to restore its strength, shape and appearance. It may be recommended for cracked, worn or heavily restored teeth and is commonly used after root canal treatment on back teeth. A dental implant, on the other hand, replaces a missing tooth or one that can no longer be saved. It involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone, followed by a custom crown once the implant has healed.
If the natural tooth and root are healthy enough to support a restoration, a crown is generally the more conservative choice. If the tooth is missing, broken below the gum or beyond repair, an implant may provide a more suitable long-term replacement. The treatments also differ in timing. Crowns can often be completed over one or two visits, while implants require surgery and several months of healing before the final crown is fitted.
Both options can provide long-lasting results with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. However, the best choice can only be determined through a professional dental assessment, which may include 3D imaging to evaluate the tooth, root and surrounding bone.
