# Stop Letting Excel Decide What Your Data Means

There’s a habit I see in workplaces all the time, and it’s one we probably need to talk about more honestly: too many people let Excel decide what their data means.
It usually begins in a way that feels completely harmless. You paste the data into a spreadsheet, highlight the range and click 'Insert Chart'. Excel offers a few easy recommendations. You choose the first one because it looks neat, familiar, and close enough. Up pops a clustered column chart and just like that, one of the most important parts of the work "How the data will actually be understood" has been handed over to a default setting.
